Paronychia is an inflammation of the fold surrounding the nail, usually caused by microbial agents or repeated trauma such as aggressive manicures, nail-biting, or excessive moisture. During the consultation, we perform a comprehensive evaluation of the affected nail and finger and begin treatment with warm water soaks several times a day, along with topical or oral antibiotics depending on the severity. If there is a purulent collection, we perform drainage using sterile technique right in the office. We supplement this with nail care guidelines and correction of triggering factors to ensure sustained improvement. The goal is to control the infection, relieve pain, and restore the health of the nail fold.
